One for the Memory Box

Joanna, who has been overweight most of her life, lost 65 pounds in the past two years. She told me a great story. This week her husband spontaneously picked her up and carried her over the threshold. He had not been able to do that when they had married four years ago. It was such an amazing moment for Joanna that she cried. I asked Joanna to write this memory on an index card and put it in her “Memory Box,” a file box that contains cards detailing significant experiences that encapsulate how happy she is to have lost weight. Joanna has quite a collection of memory cards now, including how wonderful it has been to get compliments from specific people, to cross her knees easily, to have her doctor tell her she is no longer at risk to develop diabetes, to go skiing with her husband and friends, to go to a family function and not feel self-conscious, and on and on. Joanna will need to review these cards in future months and years whenever her motivation to keep eating and exercising in a healthy way flags. The cards will remind her why it’s so worth it to keep up her efforts.

I bought the first Beck Diet Solution book and don’t remember this. But it sounds interesting, and I will try it for sure. Maybe I can even add photos in. This Memory Box may be better than the Advantage Response Card! (:

    What a wonderful story 🙂

Remembering our successes is such an important part of keeping up our motivation. I have a page in the notebook in my handbag where I record new personal bests in the gym.

What a wonderful, wonderful story! I have never been married and have been 100+ pounds overweight since college – and no one has ever picked me up and carried me – I want that experience someday!

I too love this story! I have a Happy Box in which I put things that have helped me get over unhappy moments or days. I used to suffer from depression and then I went to a nutritionist and she helped me set up a plan that helped me overcome that depression. I have not been depressed since April of 2009 and it’s Oct. 2010. I will start this Happy Weight Loss Memory Box. I feel loved when I am complimented and so this is a big incentive for me to lose weight. So, I believe this idea will work!
